Creative Aquarium Decorations

Aquarium decorations are where you can really get creative and bring out the personality in your aquarium.  There are just limitless options as to what you can do with the decor inside your fish tank and how you choose to make it look.

Many people go with the traditional look of an aquarium – plants, either plastic or real, a couple of decorative bubblers like a treasure chest or the ever-popular diver, and maybe some large decorative rocks or shells.  This is popular aquarium decoration for a reason – it looks good!

If you want to get a bit more creative, though, but still don’t want a “theme” within your aquarium decorations, there are things like neon-colored plastic rocks and statues, tribal-looking statues, and ceramic or glass skulls that your fish can swim in and around.  You can buy different colored plastic plants to add interest.  I’ve seen red, yellow and purple plants as well as more real-looking varieties!

Some very creative aquarists come up with elaborate themes based on a certain place, period of time or even a tv show.  I’ve seen miniature castle aquarium decoration themes as well as a theme built around the cartoon “Sponge Bob Squarepants“!  The sky (and your budget) is the limit when it comes to decorating your fish tank!

Some important things to keep in mind when decorating the inside of your aquarium:

  1. Never put anything inside your aquarium that isn’t made for aquarium use.  You can create dangerous chemical and pH imbalances when you place things inside your tank that are not to be immersed in water for a length of time.  Some plastics and metals will wear down and leave harmful residues in the water that will harm or even kill your fish.
  2. Make sure whatever decor you choose allows there to be ample space for swimming.  Your fish also need places to hide when they’re feeling stressed and rest when they need to.  Fish like light, but they need to have a darkened resting place, just like we do!

You can have a lot of fun with your aquarium decorations! Just remember that it is still the home of living animals and their comfort should come first.
